The flu can begin with symptoms that resemble the common cold, but the infection is generally more severe, highly contagious, and longer lasting with lingering fatigue and weakness. Influenza can make a person more susceptible to pneumonia, sinus problems, bronchitis, and ear infections.

People over the age of sixty can be seriously affected by the flu. It is the fifth leading cause of death in the elderly. Flu shots have not been as successful as hoped because viral strains constantly change and make one year’s vaccine virtually obsolete.

Influenza (or flu) is an acute viral infection of the upper respiratory tract or digestive tract caused by a rhinovirus.

Symptoms include body aches, headache, fatigue and lethargy, fever,chills, hot flashes, dry or sore throat, cough, nausea and vomiting,diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Weakness, loss of appetite, and possibly a mildly depressed feeling can also accompany the illness.

Dietary considerations
Eat clear soups and grandma’s chicken soup. Be sure to hydrate during the acute phase, consuming plenty of fluids, such as spring water, herbal teas, and fruit juices. Eliminate sugars and refined foods, and concentrate instead on fresh vegetables, steamed brown rice, and whey protein shakes.

Avoid pasteurized dairy foods as well as caffeine and alcohol. Also include power mushrooms—reishi, maitake, and shiitake.

As you recover, gradually build your strength and have a massage once a week for one month. During the acute stage, take a sea-salt-and-baking-soda bath (see the section Therapeutic Baths), and sip room temperature water while bathing. To continue your progress, take a walk after dinner as your strength returns.

Look for alcohol-free echinacea and goldenseal liquid extracts, and put the drops in juice.
